Táborsko (aus der Mappe „16 Ansichten tschechischer Landschaften 'Česka Krajiná'“)
Historical Context
Táborsko refers to the landscape region around Tábor, a major city in south Bohemia founded by the Hussite religious reformers in 1420 and one of the most historically charged sites in Czech memory. The Hussite movement, which preceded the Protestant Reformation by a century, was central to Czech Protestant identity and national self-understanding. Engelmüller's inclusion of Táborsko in his portfolio of Czech landscapes was therefore an assertion of historical depth, connecting landscape to the most significant episode of medieval Czech religious and political history. The painting is at the Belvedere in Vienna.
Technical Analysis
The landscape around Tábor is characterized by rolling hills and broad valleys, and Engelmüller organizes his view around these forms with naturalistic confidence. The palette is moderate and northern; the technique careful and observational, appropriate to a documentary landscape project.
