Zusammenfluss von Moldau und Elbe
Historical Context
The confluence of the Moldau (Vltava) and the Elbe at Mělník — just north of Prague — was one of the most geographically significant points in Bohemia, where the country's two major rivers joined to flow northward into Germany. Engelmüller's view of the confluence carries both geographic and symbolic importance: the two rivers embodied the two principal drainage basins of Bohemia, their meeting a kind of landscape completion. The hills above the confluence are crowned by the historic town of Mělník, famous for its wine production — the northernmost wine-growing area in Bohemia.
Technical Analysis
The two rivers joining is treated as a broad, luminous horizontal composition with the bluff of Mělník providing vertical relief. Engelmüller gives particular attention to the contrasting water surfaces and their character. The palette is warm and river-landscape appropriate, capturing the broad valley setting.
