Charles-Alexandre de Calonne (1734-1802) by Élisabeth Louise Vigée Le Brun

Charles-Alexandre de Calonne (1734-1802)

Élisabeth Louise Vigée Le Brun·1784

Historical Context

Vigée Le Brun painted Charles-Alexandre de Calonne around 1784, depicting the Finance Minister of France who was attempting to address the monarchy's catastrophic financial situation through a program of fiscal reform. Calonne was one of the most powerful men in France at this date, and his portrait by Vigée Le Brun combined formal grandeur — the minister in his official robes at his desk — with the psychological directness of her best portraiture. The portrait was painted just three years before Calonne was dismissed and the financial crisis he failed to resolve contributed to the revolutionary situation of 1789.

Technical Analysis

Vigée Le Brun renders the minister at his desk amid official papers and luxurious furnishings with characteristic brilliance. The rich fabrics and commanding pose convey authority, while the warm palette and subtle characterization reveal the sitter's engaging personality.
