Desiderius Erasmus (1466-1536) by Quinten Metsys

Desiderius Erasmus (1466-1536)

Quinten Metsys·1517

Historical Context

Metsys’s portrait of Erasmus in the Royal Collection is a version of the famous 1517 likeness that documented the greatest scholar of the Northern Renaissance. The portrait’s presence in the British Royal Collection may reflect its connection to the diptych originally sent to Thomas More—works from More’s collection passed through various English hands over the centuries. Erasmus is shown writing, the pen and book defining his identity as thoroughly as any coat of arms.

Technical Analysis

The scholar’s concentrated expression is rendered with penetrating psychological insight, the downcast eyes focused on the page. The still-life of books and writing implements surrounding Erasmus is painted with trompe-l’oeil conviction.
