The Annunciation
Grão Vasco·1500
Historical Context
Grão Vasco painted this Annunciation around 1500 for the Lamego Cathedral commission. The archangel Gabriel's announcement to Mary was typically the opening scene of Marian altarpiece cycles. Grão Vasco's early treatment of this subject shows his foundational engagement with Northern European painting models. The oil medium allowed for rich tonal transitions and glazed layers of color that created luminous depth impossible with the older tempera technique. Such devotional panels served both liturgical contexts in churches and chapels and private devotional use in the homes of wealthy families who maintained personal altars and oratories.
Technical Analysis
Oil on panel with clear composition and careful rendering of the Annunciation setting. The early work demonstrates the Netherlandish influences that would characterize Grão Vasco's entire career.
