Annunciation
Grão Vasco·1503
Historical Context
Grão Vasco painted this Annunciation around 1503 during his productive years as the leading painter of the Viseu region in Portugal. Born Vasco Fernandes, he was the most important Portuguese painter of the early 16th century. His style synthesizes Flemish techniques, learned through Portuguese contacts with the Netherlands, with Iberian devotional intensity. The oil medium allowed for rich tonal transitions and glazed layers of color that created luminous depth impossible with the older tempera technique.
Technical Analysis
Oil on panel with Grão Vasco's synthesis of Netherlandish technique and Portuguese devotional sensibility. The Annunciation scene shows his command of detailed rendering combined with warm Mediterranean coloring.
