Touc, Seated on a Table

Painted in 1880 and now at the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, this early work shows a seated figure identified as 'Touc' — likely a family nickname — and dates to Lautrec's adolescence, when he was working within the Impressionist-influenced tradition he absorbed from early teachers and family connections. The casual, informal domestic subject reflects the comfortable aristocratic world of his upbringing before he transplanted himself to Montmartre's bohemia. At this date he had not yet suffered the bone fractures of 1878 and 1879 that would permanently affect his physical development, though his artistic precocity was already evident to those around him.

The early Impressionist-influenced handling shows loose, confident strokes building the casual indoor scene. Light from an unseen source models the seated figure informally, with the surrounding space sketched in rather than elaborated, reflecting the exploratory quality of the teenage artist's developing method.
