Saint Francis receives the Seven Privileges from the Angel
Jusepe de Ribera·c. 1632
Historical Context
Saint Francis receiving the seven privileges from an angel depicts a specific Franciscan devotional tradition in which the order's founder was granted special spiritual graces. Ribera painted this around 1632, during his most productive decade in Naples, when he was simultaneously serving as court painter to the Spanish viceroy and fulfilling commissions from the city's major religious houses. The Franciscans were among the most active patrons of art in Counter-Reformation Naples.
Technical Analysis
The encounter between the earthly saint and the celestial messenger is staged through dramatic contrasts of light and shadow. Francis's rough brown habit and weathered features contrast with the angel's luminous flesh and flowing drapery, embodying the meeting of mortal and divine.
