Five Portraits

Five Portraits at the Thiel Gallery in Stockholm is among Hammershoi's most ambitious figural works, assembling five individuals in a single large canvas in a format that challenged his usual preference for solitary subjects and empty rooms. The Thiel Gallery, founded by the Swedish banker and art patron Ernest Thiel, holds one of the most important private collections of Nordic Symbolist painting, with major holdings of Munch, Zorn, and Hammershoi. A group portrait of five presented Hammershoi with compositional challenges he rarely faced: how to organise multiple presences while maintaining the stillness and restraint that defined his single-figure works.

Distributing five portraits across a single canvas required careful spatial planning and consistent lighting to unify the group. Hammershoi likely arranged the figures at studied intervals, using tonal consistency and his characteristic muted palette to create a group that reads as a composed whole rather than a collection of individuals.
