Portrait of Margaret of Austria by Master of the Bruges Legend of St. Ursula

Portrait of Margaret of Austria

Master of the Bruges Legend of St. Ursula·1485

Historical Context

This portrait of Margaret of Austria was painted around 1485 by the Master of the Bruges Legend of Saint Ursula, an anonymous painter active in Bruges. Margaret, daughter of Emperor Maximilian I and Mary of Burgundy, was one of the most powerful women in early sixteenth-century Europe. This childhood portrait documents her appearance before her eventful career as regent of the Netherlands. This work belongs to the Early Renaissance, the transformative period in European art when painters first applied mathematical perspective, naturalistic figure modeling, and archaeological interest in antiquity to the inherited traditions of medieval devotional painting.

Technical Analysis

Oil on panel with delicate rendering of the young princess's features and costume. The Bruges Master's refined technique is evident in the precise treatment of fabrics and the naturalistic portrait likeness.
