The Birth of Christ
Historical Context
Gian-Francesco de Maineri, a painter active in Ferrara in the late fifteenth century, created this Birth of Christ around 1497. Working in the artistic orbit of the Este court, Maineri's style reflects the influence of Ercole de' Roberti and Costa. His relatively small body of surviving works shows a distinctive blend of Ferrarese linearity with softer Emilian devotional sentiment. This work belongs to the High Renaissance, when the innovations of the preceding century were synthesized into works of monumental clarity and ideal beauty.
Technical Analysis
Oil on panel with the precise draftsmanship characteristic of the Ferrarese school. The Nativity scene combines intimate devotional feeling with the sharp, somewhat angular figure style typical of artists in Ercole de' Roberti's circle.
