Hans Fries painted this panel of the Resurrection of the Blessed from a Last Judgement altar in 1501 in Fribourg, Switzerland. Fries was the leading painter of German-speaking Switzerland, producing ambitious altarpiece cycles that combined German and Burgundian influences. The Last Judgement was among the most demanding subjects in Christian art. The tempera medium required careful preparation on a gessoed panel and a disciplined layering technique that produced precise, durable surfaces suited to the intricate detail expected of devotional painting.
