Lamentation of Christ
Historical Context
Bartholomäus Zeitblom painted this Lamentation of Christ in 1502 as part of his extensive altarpiece production for Swabian churches. The mourning over Christ's body was one of the most frequently depicted scenes in the Passion cycle. Zeitblom's version reflects the dignified, formal approach of the Ulm school. The tempera medium required careful preparation on a gessoed panel and a disciplined layering technique that produced precise, durable surfaces suited to the intricate detail expected of devotional painting.
Technical Analysis
Oil on panel with Zeitblom's bright palette and carefully posed mourning figures. The formal arrangement balances emotional expression with the compositional clarity valued in the Ulm painting tradition.
