Lamentation of Christ
Historical Context
The Master of Saint Severin painted this Lamentation of Christ around 1500 in Cologne. Named after paintings in the church of Saint Severin, this anonymous master was one of the leading painters of the Cologne school in the late Gothic period. His emotional but restrained treatment of the mourning scene reflects Cologne's devotional painting tradition. The tempera medium required careful preparation on a gessoed panel and a disciplined layering technique that produced precise, durable surfaces suited to the intricate detail expected of devotional painting.
Technical Analysis
