Wolfgang I. Graf von Oettingen by Martin Schaffner

Wolfgang I. Graf von Oettingen

Martin Schaffner·1508

Historical Context

Martin Schaffner painted this portrait of Wolfgang I, Count of Oettingen, around 1508 in Ulm. Schaffner was a leading Ulm painter who succeeded Zeitblom as the dominant artistic figure in the city. His portraits of the regional nobility document the appearance and status of Swabian aristocratic society. The tempera medium required careful preparation on a gessoed panel and a disciplined layering technique that produced precise, durable surfaces suited to the intricate detail expected of devotional painting.

Technical Analysis

Oil on panel with Schaffner's precise Swabian technique and formal portrait composition. The count's features and costume are rendered with the descriptive clarity and dignified bearing expected of aristocratic portraiture.
