Passionstafel, rechte Tafel: Grablegung Christi by Thoman Burgkmair

Passionstafel, rechte Tafel: Grablegung Christi

Thoman Burgkmair·1495

Historical Context

Thoman Burgkmair, father of the more famous Hans Burgkmair the Elder, was active as a painter in Augsburg during the second half of the fifteenth century. This Passion panel depicting the Entombment of Christ dates to around 1495 and formed part of a multi-panel altarpiece. The elder Burgkmair contributed to Augsburg's artistic traditions before his son transformed them through contact with Italian art.

Technical Analysis

Oil on panel with competent Swabian figure drawing and conventional Passion iconography. The composition follows established models for the Entombment scene popular in South German altarpieces.
