Maria mit Kind (Kopie nach einem verlorenen Original) (Kopie nach)
Quinten Metsys·1512
Historical Context
This copy after a lost original by Quinten Metsys preserves a Madonna and Child composition by the leading Antwerp painter of the early sixteenth century. Metsys founded the Antwerp school of painting and was renowned for synthesizing the Jan van Eyck tradition with Italian influences, particularly Leonardo's sfumato technique. The oil medium allowed for rich tonal transitions and glazed layers of color that created luminous depth impossible with the older tempera technique. Such devotional panels served both liturgical contexts in churches and chapels and private devotional use in the homes of wealthy families who maintained personal altars and oratories.
Technical Analysis
The copy reproduces Metsys' characteristic soft modeling and Leonardesque tonal transitions, though likely with somewhat simplified handling of the original's subtle glazing layers.
