Napoleon on the Battlefield of Eylau
Antoine-Jean Gros·1807
Historical Context
Gros's Napoleon on the Battlefield of Eylau of 1807 is his masterpiece, depicting Napoleon surveying the frozen field after the indecisive February 1807 battle in East Prussia that ended in French tactical victory but with catastrophic losses. Napoleon commissioned the painting specifically to answer criticism of the battle's cost, and Gros created an image of compassionate leadership — the Emperor reaching down to console a wounded Russian officer — that transformed a bloody near-defeat into a monument of humane warfare. The painting established the prototype for all subsequent Napoleonic historical painting.
Technical Analysis
The vast, snow-covered battlefield dotted with dead and wounded creates a haunting backdrop for Napoleon's central figure. Gros's muted palette of greys, whites, and earth tones conveys the bitter cold and human suffering with unprecedented frankness for an official commission.
