Polyptyque de Sant'Antonio by Piero della Francesca

Polyptyque de Sant'Antonio

Piero della Francesca·1469

Historical Context

Piero della Francesca's Polyptych of Sant'Antonio is among his most substantial surviving altarpieces, combining multiple panels into a unified theological program. The polyptych format with the Annunciation in the upper register and the Madonna enthroned with saints in the main tier creates a spatial and theological hierarchy characteristic of Italian altarpiece tradition. Piero's characteristic diffused light unifies all the separate panels into a coherent spatial vision, the saints and holy figures inhabiting a shared ideal space removed from historical contingency. The work demonstrates how his mathematical approach to perspective could be placed in service of traditional altarpiece theology.

Technical Analysis

Piero's mathematical approach to composition is evident in the precisely constructed perspective of the central panel's architecture, while his luminous, light-saturated palette unifies the multiple panels into a coherent whole.
