In the Salon at the Rue des Moulins by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec

In the Salon at the Rue des Moulins

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec·1894

Historical Context

Painted in 1894 and now at the Musée Toulouse-Lautrec in Albi, this is among the most important works of Lautrec's career — a monumental, almost sociological documentation of the reception room at the licensed brothel on the Rue des Moulins. Lautrec spent extended periods living in this establishment during 1894-1895, producing a comprehensive body of work on the women's domestic and professional lives. The salon scene shows several women in their working clothes seated in the bourgeois interior of the house — their casual, waiting postures stripped of any glamour or titillation. The scale of the work (approximately 111 × 132 cm) signals Lautrec's ambition to make this a definitive statement.

Technical Analysis

The large-format composition arranges multiple figures across the salon space with controlled compositional authority — the women's figures are individually characterised while collectively forming a unified social tableau. The oil technique maintains Lautrec's characteristic flatness and directness on a large scale, avoiding the academic finish that would compromise its documentary honesty.
