Baptism of Christ by Parmigianino

Baptism of Christ

Parmigianino·1519

Historical Context

This Baptism of Christ dates to 1519, making it one of the earliest surviving works by Parmigianino, painted when he was approximately sixteen. Already showing remarkable technical facility, the young artist was working in the tradition established by his uncles, the painters Pier Ilario and Michele Mazzola, who raised him after his father's early death. Characteristic of the artist's mature approach, the work displays extreme elongation of figures achieving serpentine elegance, delicate silvery palette, compressed spatial arrangements, a technical perfectionism that sometimes borders on obsession.

Technical Analysis

Despite its early date, the painting reveals a sophisticated understanding of figure composition and spatial arrangement. The treatment of water and landscape shows the influence of northern Italian painting traditions, while the figures hint at the elegance that would define Parmigianino's mature style.
