Risen Christ
Pietro Lorenzetti·1336
Historical Context
Pietro Lorenzetti's Risen Christ, painted around 1336 and now in the Museo dell'Opera Metropolitana del Duomo in Siena, depicts the triumphant resurrection that was the culmination of the Passion narrative central to Gothic devotional art. Created during Pietro's mature period when he was at the height of his powers, the work reflects the theological emphasis on Christ's victory over death that permeated Sienese religious culture. Pietro and his brother Ambrogio both died in the Black Death of 1348, making their late works particularly poignant.
Technical Analysis
The panel is executed in egg tempera with gold ground, featuring Pietro's mature style of powerful figure modeling and dramatic spatial composition. The risen Christ is rendered with a monumental physicality that shows the influence of Giotto, tempered by the Sienese tradition's lyrical refinement.
