Adéle de Toulouse-Lautrec in the salon at Malromé by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec

Adéle de Toulouse-Lautrec in the salon at Malromé

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec·1886

Historical Context

Painted in 1886 and now at the Musée Toulouse-Lautrec in Albi, this portrait of his mother Adèle in the salon of the Malromé château shows Lautrec's continued engagement with the domestic world of his aristocratic family even as he was establishing himself in the bohemian world of Montmartre. His mother was among his most important and most tenderly observed subjects — their relationship, though sometimes complicated by her concern for his welfare and his resistance to her anxieties, was one of genuine devotion. Malromé, acquired by Adèle in 1883, was where Lautrec would ultimately die in August 1901.

Technical Analysis

The domestic interior portrait shows Adèle in the formal salon setting of the aristocratic house, her figure positioned within the carefully arranged space with the naturalness Lautrec always sought in portraiture. The interior light, filtered through windows, creates a cool, even illumination that he renders with increasing confidence in his handling of domestic settings.
