La Toilette by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec

La Toilette

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec·1896

Historical Context

Painted in 1896 and now at the Musée d'Orsay, this is one of Lautrec's most important treatments of the toilette subject — a woman seated, her back to the viewer, engaged in the private act of personal grooming. The work is formally related to Degas's series of women bathing and drying themselves, but Lautrec's observation carries a different social charge: the woman's body, fully present yet entirely turned away, represents the private self that performance never shows. The 1896 date places it in the most productive period of his mature career.

Technical Analysis

The figure seen from behind creates a composition of extraordinary simplicity — the curved back and the gown fallen from the shoulders are the primary elements. Lautrec renders the flesh tones and the fabric with thin, directional strokes that describe the form without academic elaboration. The warm ochre ground shows through the paint surface, integrating figure and space.
