Virgin and Child with Two Angels by Master of the Bruges Legend of St. Ursula

Virgin and Child with Two Angels

Master of the Bruges Legend of St. Ursula·1480

Historical Context

The Master of the Bruges Legend of Saint Ursula painted this Virgin and Child with Two Angels around 1480. Active in Bruges during the golden age of Netherlandish painting, this master produced refined devotional works in the tradition of Memling and other Bruges masters. The angelic attendants add a celestial dimension to the intimate devotional composition. This work belongs to the Early Renaissance, the transformative period in European art when painters first applied mathematical perspective, naturalistic figure modeling, and archaeological interest in antiquity to the inherited traditions of medieval devotional painting.

Technical Analysis

Oil on panel with luminous Bruges technique and careful attention to the angelic figures. The refined surface treatment and gentle coloring reflect the high standards of late fifteenth-century Bruges painting.
