Madonna di Monticchiello
Pietro Lorenzetti·1315
Historical Context
The Madonna di Monticchiello by Pietro Lorenzetti, dated to around 1315, is an early devotional panel that takes its name from the Tuscan hamlet of Monticchiello near Pienza, for whose church it was originally created. Now in the Museo Diocesano d'Arte Sacra, the painting reflects the widespread demand for high-quality Madonna panels in even the smaller communities of the Sienese contado during the Gothic period. The work documents Pietro's early development as he established himself alongside his brother Ambrogio as one of Siena's foremost painters.
Technical Analysis
Painted in egg tempera on gold-ground panel, this early work shows Pietro developing his characteristic approach to the Madonna theme with solidly modeled forms and an expressive tenderness in the relationship between Mother and Child. The gold ground is tooled with decorative punch-work typical of Sienese Gothic workshop practice.
