Madonna and Child with Saints by Parmigianino

Madonna and Child with Saints

Parmigianino·1530

Historical Context

Saints attend the Madonna and Child in this altarpiece from around 1530 at the Uffizi Gallery, created during the period when Parmigianino was working in Bologna after fleeing the Sack of Rome in 1527. His Bolognese works refine the extreme elegance he had developed in Rome, where exposure to Michelangelo and Raphael's art had intensified his own Mannerist tendencies. The Uffizi's collection of Emilian painting provides essential context for understanding Parmigianino's position in Italian art.

Technical Analysis

The sacra conversazione format is transformed by Parmigianino's Mannerist sensibility into an arrangement of extraordinary refinement. Elongated figures occupy a shallow space with studied elegance, their poses creating flowing rhythmic lines. The surface finish is exceptionally smooth, with flesh achieving the porcelain quality characteristic of his most polished works.
