The Mystic Marriage of Saint Catherine of Alexandria with Saints Catherine of Siena, Paul and Jerome
Moretto da Brescia·1543
Historical Context
This complex sacra conversazione of 1543, depicting the Mystic Marriage of Saint Catherine with three other saints, was painted for the Church of San Clemente in Brescia. The subject of Catherine's mystical betrothal to Christ was especially popular among female religious communities. The presence of Catherine of Siena alongside Catherine of Alexandria in the same painting reflects the complex layering of Dominican patronage and hagiographic devotion in Counter-Reformation Brescia.
Technical Analysis
Moretto arranges the five figures in a rhythmic, balanced composition, his cool palette and soft lighting creating an atmosphere of contemplative devotion appropriate to the mystical subject.
