Monticchiello Altarpiece
Pietro Lorenzetti·1315
Historical Context
Pietro Lorenzetti's Monticchiello Altarpiece, dating to around 1315, is an early work now preserved in the Musée de Tessé in Le Mans, having been removed from its original setting in the Tuscan hill town of Monticchiello. As one of Pietro's earliest documented works, it reveals the young Sienese painter developing his distinctive approach to emotional expression while still working within the established conventions of Duccio's workshop tradition. The altarpiece served the devotional needs of a rural Sienese parish church.
Technical Analysis
Executed in tempera on gold-ground panel in the traditional polyptych format, the work shows the early development of Pietro's figural style with slightly stiff poses that would later give way to greater naturalism. The gold tooling and decorative punch work in the halos demonstrate skilled craftsmanship typical of the Sienese tradition.
