Sacra conversazione
Alvise Vivarini·1480
Historical Context
Sacra conversazione, at the Gallerie dell'Accademia in Venice, depicts the Madonna enthroned with saints in the informal gathering format that Giovanni Bellini had established as the definitive Venetian sacred composition. Painted around 1480, Alvise Vivarini's version shows his debt to Bellini while asserting a more linear, architecturally precise spatial arrangement. The Accademia holds the great systematic collection of Venetian painting from the thirteenth through the eighteenth century, and Alvise's panel sits within a rich context of related sacra conversazione compositions.
Technical Analysis
The Madonna is enthroned within an architectural setting rendered in careful perspective, the saints flanking her in the relaxed but formally balanced arrangement the sacra conversazione format required. Alvise's handling of the architectural frame is more rigidly geometric than Bellini's warmer, more atmospherically modulated versions of the same subject.
