Madonna of mercy
Moretto da Brescia·1520
Historical Context
Moretto da Brescia's Madonna of Mercy depicts the Virgin spreading her mantle over a group of suppliants — the Misericordia type that was one of the oldest and most popular images of Marian protection in medieval and Renaissance Italy. The gesture of sheltering those who seek refuge under the mantle embodied the theology of Marian intercession: the Virgin as mediator between human frailty and divine justice, her mantle creating a protected space immune from sin's consequences. Moretto's version, consistent with his naturalistic approach, presents the sheltered figures as recognizable social types — clergy, laity, men, women — whose variety suggests the universal accessibility of Marian protection to all who seek it.
Technical Analysis
The expansive mantle creates a monumental triangular composition, with Moretto's characteristic silvery palette lending the protective Virgin an aura of celestial authority.
