Vijf knielende figuren van een stichtersgroep by Master of Alkmaar

Vijf knielende figuren van een stichtersgroep

Master of Alkmaar·1515

Historical Context

The Master of Alkmaar, an anonymous North Holland painter active around 1490-1520, created this panel of five kneeling donor figures around 1515. Best known for the Seven Works of Mercy altarpiece in Alkmaar (1504), this artist was a key figure in establishing the distinctive style of Holland province painting. The oil medium allowed for rich tonal transitions and glazed layers of color that created luminous depth impossible with the older tempera technique. Such devotional panels served both liturgical contexts in churches and chapels and private devotional use in the homes of wealthy families who maintained personal altars and oratories.

Technical Analysis

The donor portraits show careful individualized characterization typical of Netherlandish painting, with precise costume details and devout poses indicating the sitters' social standing.
