The Battle of Quiberon Bay, 20 November 1759
Dominic Serres·1779
Historical Context
Dominic Serres painted the Battle of Quiberon Bay, a decisive British naval victory of November 20, 1759, during the Seven Years' War. Admiral Hawke's fleet pursued the French into the treacherous waters of Quiberon Bay in a gale, sinking or capturing most of the French fleet and ending any hope of a French invasion of Britain. The battle was one of the most audacious actions in British naval history.
Technical Analysis
Serres renders the chaotic battle in stormy conditions, with ships visible through driving rain and spray. The accurate depiction of the rocky coastline and violent seas conveys the extraordinary danger of fighting in such confined and treacherous waters.
