The Moonlight Battle: the Battle off Cape St Vincent, 16 January 1780

Dominic Serres painted this scene of the Battle off Cape St. Vincent in January 1780, a nighttime naval engagement known as the "Moonlight Battle" between British and Spanish forces. Admiral Sir George Rodney's victory secured vital supplies for the besieged garrison at Gibraltar. Serres, the Marine Painter to George III, was the official chronicler of British naval engagements during this period.

Serres captures the drama of nocturnal naval combat with moonlight breaking through gun smoke to illuminate the warring fleets. The careful rendering of ship details and the atmospheric handling of night light demonstrate his expertise as a marine specialist.
