The Annunciation
Historical Context
Rueland Frueauf the Elder painted this Annunciation around 1500 in Salzburg. Frueauf was the leading painter of the Salzburg school during the transition from late Gothic to early Renaissance. His religious paintings combine Alpine devotional traditions with awareness of Italian spatial innovations. The oil medium allowed for rich tonal transitions and glazed layers of color that created luminous depth impossible with the older tempera technique. Such devotional panels served both liturgical contexts in churches and chapels and private devotional use in the homes of wealthy families who maintained personal altars and oratories.
Technical Analysis
Oil on panel with clear Salzburg coloring and careful spatial construction. The Annunciation is staged with attention to the architectural setting and the figures' devotional interaction.
