Frei Carlos's Ascension of Christ presents the moment of Christ's bodily ascent to heaven forty days after the Resurrection, witnessed by the assembled apostles and the Virgin Mary below. For this Portuguese monk-painter, the Ascension affirmed Christ's triumphant return to the Father and the promise of the disciples' own eventual glorification. Frei Carlos's treatment combines Flemish compositional conventions — the upward-gazing figures arranged in a circle around the ascending Christ — with the expressive intensity of his devotional practice as a Hieronymite friar. The gold-tinged heavenly light surrounding Christ's ascending figure creates the luminous effect that characterizes his finest works.

The Ascension scene divides between the ascending Christ above and the astonished apostles below. Frei Carlos's Flemish technique is adapted to the devotional requirements of his Portuguese monastic context.
