Saint Anthony
Matthias Grünewald·1515
Historical Context
Grünewald's Saint Anthony panel, part of the Isenheim Altarpiece, was created for the Antonite order that specialized in treating ergotism (Saint Anthony's Fire). The tormented saint surrounded by demons had direct relevance for patients suffering from the disease's terrifying hallucinations, offering the promise that suffering endured with faith would be overcome. The oil medium allowed for rich tonal transitions and glazed layers of color that created luminous depth impossible with the older tempera technique.
Technical Analysis
The panel displays Grünewald's unmatched ability to render the grotesque and supernatural, with fantastical demons painted in vivid, disturbing detail that contrasts with the saint's serene spiritual resistance.
