Annunciation
Matthias Grünewald·1512
Historical Context
Matthias Grünewald's Annunciation panel forms part of the Isenheim Altarpiece (first opening), completed around 1512-1516 for the Antonite monastery. The Annunciation is revealed when the altarpiece's outer panels are opened, forming part of a joyful Christmas scene contrasting dramatically with the tormented Crucifixion on the exterior. The oil medium allowed for rich tonal transitions and glazed layers of color that created luminous depth impossible with the older tempera technique. Such devotional panels served both liturgical contexts in churches and chapels and private devotional use in the homes of wealthy families who maintained personal altars and oratories.
Technical Analysis
Grünewald renders the Annunciation with his characteristic luminous color and visionary light effects, using the chapel setting to create a mystical space where divine and earthly realms interpenetrate.
