Coburg Panel

Matthias Grünewald painted this Coburg Panel around 1500, during his early career. Grünewald was the most emotionally powerful painter of the German Renaissance, developing a style of visionary intensity unmatched by any contemporary. His rare surviving panels are among the most prized works in German art. The tempera medium required careful preparation on a gessoed panel and a disciplined layering technique that produced precise, durable surfaces suited to the intricate detail expected of devotional painting.
