Coburg Panel by Matthias Grünewald

Coburg Panel

Matthias Grünewald·1500

Historical Context

Matthias Grünewald painted this Coburg Panel around 1500, during his early career. Grünewald was the most emotionally powerful painter of the German Renaissance, developing a style of visionary intensity unmatched by any contemporary. His rare surviving panels are among the most prized works in German art. The tempera medium required careful preparation on a gessoed panel and a disciplined layering technique that produced precise, durable surfaces suited to the intricate detail expected of devotional painting.

Technical Analysis

Oil on panel with Grünewald's extraordinary luminous coloring and emotionally charged atmosphere. The panel demonstrates the early development of the visionary style that would reach its peak in the Isenheim Altarpiece.
