The Circumcision
Grão Vasco·1500
Historical Context
Grão Vasco painted this Circumcision around 1500 for the Lamego Cathedral commission. The Lamego altarpiece was one of the earliest major commissions that established Grão Vasco's reputation. The temple setting of the circumcision provided opportunities for architectural rendering. The oil medium allowed for rich tonal transitions and glazed layers of color that created luminous depth impossible with the older tempera technique. Such devotional panels served both liturgical contexts in churches and chapels and private devotional use in the homes of wealthy families who maintained personal altars and oratories.
Technical Analysis
Oil on panel with careful rendering of the ritual scene and temple architecture. The composition shows Grão Vasco's early style before the full maturation evident in the later Viseu commission.
