Presentation at the Temple
Grão Vasco·1503
Historical Context
Grão Vasco painted this Presentation at the Temple around 1503 for the Viseu Cathedral commission. This version of the subject for a different commission shows how the painter adapted his approach to meet varying institutional requirements. The comparison between his Lamego and Viseu versions reveals his artistic development. The oil medium allowed for rich tonal transitions and glazed layers of color that created luminous depth impossible with the older tempera technique.
Technical Analysis
Oil on panel with Grão Vasco's refined technique and warm Portuguese palette. The temple interior is rendered with architectural detail reflecting Netherlandish influences.
