Hl. Katherina (Innenseite) und Hl. Stephanus? (Außenseite)
Friedrich Pacher·1490
Historical Context
Friedrich Pacher painted these double-sided altarpiece wing panels showing Saint Katherine on the interior and Saint Stephen on the exterior around 1490. The pairing of virgin martyr and protomartyr was a common devotional combination. Friedrich continued working in the style established by his uncle Michael Pacher, maintaining the family workshop's reputation in South Tyrol. This work belongs to the High Renaissance, when the innovations of the preceding century were synthesized into works of monumental clarity and ideal beauty.
Technical Analysis
Oil on panel with competent figure drawing on both sides in the South Tyrolean tradition. The interior saint's attributes and the exterior figure are rendered with the liturgical precision expected in altarpiece commissions.
