Hl. Dorothea (Innenseite) und Hl. Alexius (Außenseite)
Friedrich Pacher·1490
Historical Context
Friedrich Pacher painted these double-sided altarpiece wing panels of Saint Dorothy on the interior and Saint Alexius on the exterior around 1490. Dorothy, a virgin martyr associated with miraculous flowers, and Alexius, a Roman nobleman who lived as a beggar, represented contrasting models of holiness. Friedrich continued working in the South Tyrolean tradition established by his uncle Michael Pacher. This work belongs to the High Renaissance, when the innovations of the preceding century were synthesized into works of monumental clarity and ideal beauty.
Technical Analysis
Oil on both sides of the panel in the South Tyrolean altarpiece tradition. The saints are rendered with competent figure drawing inherited from the Pacher workshop.
