At the Moulin Rouge: Two women waltzing by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec

At the Moulin Rouge: Two women waltzing

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec·1892

Historical Context

The Moulin Rouge dancing scenes represent Lautrec's most sustained engagement with the world that made him famous — the Montmartre dance hall where he spent years as a habitual presence, observing and recording the professional dancers, their partners, and their audience. The specific coupling of two women waltzing together — common in the dance halls where women danced with each other when male partners were unavailable or preferred — reflects his accurate social observation without the coded eroticism that contemporaries sometimes read into such images. His 1892 poster of the Moulin Rouge had already made him and the venue mutually famous.

Technical Analysis

The waltz's rotation is captured through Lautrec's use of the floor's perspective — the strong diagonal of the floorboards creating centrifugal energy around the dancing couple. His characteristic thinned paint and visible grain of cardboard support give the composition's brilliant colors a dry, slightly feverish quality.
