Juan de Flandes, a Netherlandish painter who became court artist to Isabella of Castile around 1496, painted this Christ Seated on a Cold Rock. The subject, also known as Christ in Distress, shows Christ awaiting the Crucifixion in a moment of quiet suffering. Juan de Flandes brought the refined Bruges technique to Spain, creating some of the most exquisite devotional paintings of the period.
