The Annunciation
Aelbrecht Bouts·1480
Historical Context
Aelbrecht Bouts, son of Dieric Bouts and head of the family workshop in Leuven, painted this Annunciation around 1480. Aelbrecht maintained his father's reputation for calm, contemplative devotional imagery while working in an increasingly standardized manner. His Annunciation follows the Northern European convention of setting the scene in a domestic interior. This work belongs to the Early Renaissance, the transformative period in European art when painters first applied mathematical perspective, naturalistic figure modeling, and archaeological interest in antiquity to the inherited traditions of medieval devotional painting.
Technical Analysis
Oil on panel in the Leuven tradition established by Dieric Bouts. The careful interior setting and quiet, contemplative mood of the figures reflect the elder Bouts's influence on the workshop's continued production.
