Assumption of the Virgin
Grão Vasco·1506
Historical Context
Grão Vasco painted this Assumption of the Virgin around 1506, depicting Mary's bodily ascent into heaven. The Assumption was one of the most important Marian feast subjects and a challenging compositional problem. Grão Vasco's treatment combines the upward dynamism of the scene with his characteristic devotional warmth. The oil medium allowed for rich tonal transitions and glazed layers of color that created luminous depth impossible with the older tempera technique. Such devotional panels served both liturgical contexts in churches and chapels and private devotional use in the homes of wealthy families who maintained personal altars and oratories.
Technical Analysis
Oil on panel with dramatic upward composition and warm Portuguese coloring. The ascending Virgin surrounded by angels is rendered with the emotional intensity that distinguishes Grão Vasco's mature devotional works.
