The Virgin Enthroned with St. Catherine and St. Mary Magdalene
Historical Context
The Master of Saint Severin, an anonymous Cologne painter active around 1490-1515, created this Virgin Enthroned with Saints around 1510. Named after a cycle of paintings in the Church of St. Severin in Cologne, this artist was one of the leading painters in the city during the transition from late Gothic to Renaissance styles. The tempera medium required careful preparation on a gessoed panel and a disciplined layering technique that produced precise, durable surfaces suited to the intricate detail expected of devotional painting.
Technical Analysis
The panel shows the characteristic Cologne school approach with bright, decorative color, detailed textile rendering, and the frontal enthroned composition favored in the Rhineland tradition.
