Retablo de la Epifanía
Juan Rexach·1469
Historical Context
Juan Rexach's Retablo of the Epiphany belongs to the Valencian painter's production of large-scale altarpieces for Aragonese and Valencian churches in the mid-fifteenth century. Rexach, working in the tradition of his master Jacomart and the Valencian school's synthesis of Flemish technical influence with Italianate figure clarity, produced altarpieces that served the intense devotional culture of the Crown of Aragon. The Epiphany retablo's central Adoration scene flanked by related episodes demonstrates the narrative richness that distinguished Spanish altarpiece production, where multiple registers of narrative could be combined within a single monumental structure.
Technical Analysis
Rexach's altarpiece combines the rich gold grounds and decorative splendor of the Valencian Gothic tradition with the detailed naturalism of Netherlandish painting that was transforming Iberian art.
