La Gousse

Painted in 1880 and now at the Dallas Museum of Art, this early panel painting titled La Gousse — the name possibly referring to a family acquaintance or an early model — dates to Lautrec's adolescent period when he was working seriously toward professional painting status despite his physical disabilities. Small-format panel paintings were a practical medium for a teenager still developing his technique, allowing rapid completion and revision. The work demonstrates the precocious command of observation and paint handling that convinced his parents to support his formal artistic training in Paris.
